behind the song

Between Your Eyes is a little song I wrote about when you’re so bad at reading signals and you just want to cut straight to the point. Skip all of the “will they, won’t they” games. This song was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend concerning someone I was interested in at the time. I was trying to figure out if I was misreading the signals or not. This friend said “Y’all are both trying to play it so cool, but y’all are both just weird”. That conversation suck with me and it ended up shaping the chorus.

I made a demo on garageband that had a fully fleshed out arrangement with guitar, ukulele, bass, and the automated drummer track. When I brought the demo stems to Sean Williams we ended up re-recording everything except the lead vocal. I did so many takes of the lead vocal, but I couldn’t capture the same energy and excitement that was present in the original demo.

Overall, this track was super fun to record. I remember while I was in the process of recording the track, I was about to go to sleep and suddenly I had the idea for the backing vocal. I quickly ran out of the room (so I didn’t wake up anyone) and recorded the idea for the backing vocal into my voice memos app. I ended up bringing my sister, Abigail Landreth in to record some of the backing vocals with me, which was a joy.

behind the artwork

With the artwork for Between Your Eyes I wanted to capture the quirkiness, excitement, and anxiety that is present in the record. I started with a bunch of google eyes and some 3D printed letters to lay things out and get an idea of what it would look like. Then I took a 12” x 12” wooden panel, painted it, then adhered the google eyes and 3D printed letters to it.

The artwork is so fun to jiggle around and listen to the sound the google eyes make. I was really proud with how it turned out especially with how long it took to carefully place each individual element of the piece.
