behind the song

Hey, Future Me is a little letter to myself. The lyrics were inspired by a conversation with a friend after I showed them an early voice memo of Better Days. They told me “You and I use voice memos for very different things…” I was curious and asked “Well… What do you use them for?” they replied “Well, I’ll leave little messages for my future self that are like ‘Hey future meeee, how’s it going? I’m doing pretty good, this is what I’ve been up to…’” I thought that was hilarious, and also sweet, and so that became the main inspiration for the song.

The production of the song is stripped back, just acoustic guitar and vocals. I ran the recording through a tape player, then sent that signal back to my computer and captured it. It has the sound of an old message that might’ve been recorded on a tape recorder.

behind the artwork

The artwork for Hey, Future Me was a culmination of several different artworks that collided together to make this one piece. It started with an assemblage sculpture that I created. This sculpture had little butterflies that I made from the ends of guitar strings and guitar picks as the wings. The piece is a self-portrait of sorts. Not only does it include a literal self-portrait, but it shows my thoughts and my process in a raw, un-adulterated form. Each page that was adhered to the inside of the crate is a little piece of me. The book itself has the first verse and chorus written in it, like a journal entry. It’s hard to be vulnerable sometimes, but when creating art, it’s vital.
