behind the song

Sleep On It is a song I wrote for myself. Sometimes I will write songs to communicate things to someone else, but this song I wrote because I needed to hear it. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed during transitional stages of life. I often find that I will just lose sleep while I’m overthinking everything. The fact of the matter is: everything can change in an instant, we don’t have control, so just sleep on it, it’ll all be alright.

The production of the song took on a few different turns. When we (Sean Williams and I originally recorded the scratch tracks, I had played the guitar WAYYYY too slowly. I have a tendency to play a little bit too fast, so this overcorrection left the song slugging along. Once we fixed the tempo, we also changed up the rhythm of the drums from a tom-heavy beat to a more Fleetwood Mac inspired beat. Sean added some groovy bass lines that make you just want to hop in the car and do some head bobbing.

behind the artwork

The artwork for Sleep On It was one of the first artworks I started to work on for the project. I started with some rough, illustrated concepts and the motif of an old CRT television emerged. I was creating an assemblage sculpture with an old TV my friend found on the side of the road and I thought “Hey, when I’m done with this sculpture, I could use it for this artwork. I started designing the type to go over the screen, and… the TV stopped working. But alas, I did not let a setback get in the way of my vision. I remembered I had an old Macintosh computer, so I found someone on eBay who was selling the old software and I ordered Mac Paint. I booted up the program, drew out the type and set up a still life. I wanted this artwork to capture the feeling of working on a project at your computer late at night, contemplating what you are doing with your life.
