behind the song

The Silence is about when someone you care about shuts down and the silence that follows. This song’s music had an interesting origin. I had a dream with this fictional Bon Iver styled song in it, and I woke up and sang out the melody the best I could remember at 5:00am. I then grabbed my guitar and started trying to find the harmonization for it and then kept playing and singing melodies over it with filler words, and that’s where the main verse melody came from. I went back to bed and then pulled out the voice memos after I had been up for a bit and I ran with the melodies I had found during my sleepy state. I started writing the lyrics and I had the song done in less than an hour.

Some songwriters have a process of waiting to write until they are not emotionally charged and are thinking more clearly, but I find that I tend to write in the moment as a form of catharsis. The writing may not be rational, it may not reflect how I feel a week later, but it is a snapshot of myself, frozen in a moment in time.

The production of this song was really fun, I made a string arrangement for the track and was connected with a wonderful Cello player, Joe Kovac III. Upon analyzing my score, he suggested adding in violin as its timbre was better suited for some of the higher parts of the score. He brought his fiancé, Shannon Mustard, to the session and they both knocked it out of the park. It was so awesome to watch them work and I’m so glad to have them as part of the record.

In the 11th hour, I got my mom, Cecilia Griffith to play the flute, which turned out fantastic!

behind the artwork

The artwork for The Silence spawned out of a series of happy accidents. I was making a self-portrait out of clay and it was coming along great, or so I thought… I had not used clay before, so I was not adhering each layer properly, so there were pockets of air all throughout the hair that I sculpted. So I stripped off all the hair and just went crazy, stamping my name to the forehead, making a hole where the ears would be, adding a heart to the back of the head. When it got fired in the kiln, for some reason or another, it exploded, but the remaining pieces were beautiful. I instantly knew I had to use it for the artwork for this song. So I made a lifecast of my hand, and bought a rotary phone off of Facebook marketplace and incorporated it into the piece. For the letters on the dishwasher, I 3D printed custom letters, painted them and installed small magnets to the back.

This is probably one of the most expressive artworks I have made, and it’s only fitting it’s paired with an emotionally charged song.
